SUNY Impact Foundation – Science of Reading Initiative

The SUNY Impact Foundation partners with private funders to pilot innovation and scale prove programs among the State University of New York’s 64 campuses, 1.4 million students, and 30,000+ faculty.

Led by former Heckscher Leadership Fellow and advisor, Ruth Genn, the SUNY Science of Reading Technical Advisory Group established evidence-based recommendations for novice educators’ understanding of the science of reading which they need to begin teaching reading effectively to all students. The problem was that SUNY campuses were in very different places: some campuses have been doing extraordinary work, and some have just begun to think about bringing curriculum into alignment.

Thus, in 2025, we made a substantial grant to help SUNY faculty and campuses coordinate and ensure K-12 students have access to excellent educators with an understanding of evidence-based SoR literacy practices, The grant will help SUNY to build faculty leadership and expertise through System-wide policy alignment to the SoR, supported by professional learning experiences, evidence-based materials, and quality monitoring across campuses.
