We funded Reading Partners replication from California to six elementary schools in New York City in 2010 and have since funded its expansion. It now operates in 24 reading centers in New York City and has over 1,370 community volunteers here. Reading Partners helps children become lifelong readers through individualized instruction that demands measurable results. A 2015 MDRC study using a randomized controlled trial found that the Reading Partners tutoring program significantly improved student reading skills, including reading comprehension, sight-word reading, and fluency. The study also highlighted that Reading Partners is a low-cost option for schools because it relies heavily on volunteers, with each dollar invested yielding more than two dollars in literacy resources.
