The Foundation made a catalytic investment in The Lucy Project, a Miami-based nonprofit which trains teachers and instructional coaches in Structured Literacy, an evidence based curriculum grounded in the science of reading that anchors our literacy work in New York. The Lucy Project has achieved striking results: 88% of the Kindergarten students it serves reach grade-level reading proficiency, against a district-wide elementary rate of 56%.
Our funding enabled The Lucy Project to build a centralized data platform that integrates student literacy data, consolidating assessments into real-time dashboards, automating attendance tracking, and generating individualized bilingual progress reports for every family served. The new system cuts administrative burden by 30–50%, redirecting teacher time back toward instruction and embedding concept-level progress monitoring into daily teaching.
