We are thrilled to share that NYC Salt, one of Heckscher’s long-standing arts education partners, has been selected to be part of the new Gansevoort Square development next to the Whitney Museum of American Art in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. As part of the project, NYC Salt will receive a ground-floor gallery space and play an active role in the cultural programming for this significant new public development.
The NYC Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) announced that developers Douglaston Development and Kinwood will lead the transformation of this site into a mixed-income, mixed-use community hub that combines affordable housing, artist studios, and cultural space. According to NYCEDC, Gansevoort Square will ensure that “the Meatpacking District remains a place for creativity and opportunity.”
The new gallery space will provide a permanent home for NYC Salt’s exhibitions and youth programming, deepening its impact and expanding opportunities for students to showcase their work in one of the city’s most vibrant cultural corridors.
This milestone reflects our venture philanthropy approach: funding catalytic organizations whose models can become self-sustaining and transformational. We are proud to have supported NYC Salt’s journey from a small photography mentorship program to a key cultural institution shaping the future of creative opportunity in New York City.
