We have been a leader in funding alternative education initiatives, including charter networks and schools in New York City and New York State. A 2023 study by Stanford University found that New York State charter students gained the equivalent of about 75 additional days in reading and 73 additional days in math. Success Academy Charter Schools, one of our Grantees, scholars achieved as much as 107 extra days in reading and 206 extra days in math compared with surrounding traditional public-school peers.
Independently, Heckscher Foundation CEO Peter Sloane was a founding trustee of the first charter school in New York State, Sisulu Victory Academy.
