The Heckscher Foundation helped Hot Bread Kitchen expand its proven workforce development model to serve young people facing barriers to employment. Through this initiative, Hot Bread Kitchen teaches foundational culinary and hospitality skills and connects participants with employer partners such as Restaurant Associates and other food-industry employers across New York City.
The program blends technical instruction (knife skills, food safety, kitchen systems), professional readiness (communication, teamwork, career planning) and wrap-around supports (including case management and mental-health, identity, and relationship-building resources) to help participants secure and sustain full-time jobs in the food industry. With Heckscher’s support, Hot Bread Kitchen adapted its established model to include these youth-development-focused supports, equipping young adults for long-term success in meaningful culinary careers.
