Approach

ExpandED Schools

We joined with other NYC funders to create a strategic partnership to devise and implement a plan of action to bring high-dosage, high-impact tutoring to New York City – something needed to address the continued and deep learning losses resulting from the pandemic. The partnership, with the guidance and leadership of TNTP and the support of the NYC Public Schools, chose ExpandED to serve as a backbone organization, creating partnerships between tutoring providers and New York City public schools to design, implement and continuously improve tutoring programs grounded in research and targeting students at the margins. So far, ExpandED has partnered with over 100 NYC public schools, bringing middle school math and early literacy tutoring to those schools. Tutors are highly engaged and student attendance and progress data is being closely monitored via a shared data portal. For the 2023-24 school year, students in math exhibited a median progress of one and half (1.5) years in a single year. For literacy, proficiency rates increased dramatically (by 14 percentage points). The initiative has served over 6,500 students across 12 districts during the 2024-25 school year, as well as working to shift responsibilities and ownership to district leaders to build sustainability. During the 2024-25 school year 67% of students in math tutoring achieved at least 100% of their expected annual growth, with a median progress of 167% on i-Ready’s typical growth scale – equivalent to more than 1.5 years of progress in a single year.

In ELA, 47% of students in core ELA tutoring and 59% of students in Amira met or exceeded 100% of their expected annual growth.
